The pet Industry has seen rapid growth within the last 5 years. It seems that each year new records are shattered. Billions of dollars are raining from the sky of pet owners, as people spend more and more on their pets. But it’s not too late, get out there and catch some of that money. Do not hesitate or you might end up sweeping the leftover dollars off the ground.
63% of the US households own a pet. That’s almost 65 million homes that have pets in them.
45% of the US households own more than one pet.
Do you see the dollars signs popping in your head yet? Consider this; the pet industry is the fastest growing industry with the fewest new businesses in it. Now you see the dollar signs?
$15.2 Billion is project for pet food spending this year. So what’s in it for me? You ask. Lets list a couple of businesses that you could start, some franchised most are not. Pet Food Delivery is a new and popular growing trend in America. There are a couple of small franchises available to buy into. But with a little capital and some networking you can gather a small list of manufactures or suppliers that will sell you pet food cheap. Do some marketing and you are off. Not that easy, but you get the gist. Home made dog food is quickly becoming a popular choice in pet food. People are making home made doggy treats, home made dog food and even home made all natural products for a healthier alternative. Just check your local laws before you start selling you home made goods.
$9.4 Billion is projected in the Vet Care industry this year. I’ll admit it’s not going to be easy to crack into this sector; you need lots of schooling to become a Vet. But still keep an eye on this, because you still have the opportunity to sell goods inside a Vets office with the right marketing plan. An inventive mind will come up with all kinds of services and goods that you and the Vet can partner up with.
$9.4 Billion is projected in the Supply and Medicine industry this year. Again this is a little hard to break into unless you’re a chemist. However there are always opportunities to be made in every sector. There are a few websites out there that do sell pet medicine. With the right business plan and paper work, you too can start a lucrative pet medicine business. But for those who need to start a little smaller, there is 1800Petmeds.com. Start selling their products through your own web site and get a percentage of the sale. As for the Supply part of the projection, there are plenty of opportunities here. With enough research you can find the right suppliers or drop shippers to open your own pet supply website or store front.
$2.7 Billion is projected in Pet services this year. This is a growing market that more and more people are spending their money on. In my opinion it’s going to be the fastest growing market in the pet industry this year. You name it it’s out there. I’ve seen pet spas to pet hotels and even mobile pet grooming vans that come to you. Pet daycares are popping up in every town so your little companion will not have to be alone at home all day while you work. There are pet massage therapies, pet sitters, pet walkers and even pet Yoga. I’ve seen pet aroma therapy and acupuncture therapies for your beloved pet. Don’t laugh but there is even a fast growing pet poop scooping industry. Take your pick, almost all of the pet service except grooming, can be started without too much knowledge and in some cases very little capital.
Still don’t know where to go with all this. How about special occasions for your best friend, after all he is part of the family. Here are some more stats. $31.6 million dog owners purchase Christmas gifts for their dogs. $9.8 million dog owners celebrate their dog’s birthdays.
Wait there’s more opportunities. Since pets are more like family members now more than ever, they too have pictures of themselves on the mantel. 39% of American pet owners display their pet’s picture in their home. 16% of America’s pet owners keep a picture of their pet in their wallet or purse. Pet photographers are sprouting up everywhere; you too can take advantage of this growing sector.
Striking on the family string a little more, pets are remembered just like other family members. There are some company’s that cater to the deceased pets of families. They sell small caskets and urns. Other companies will offer to clone your dog.
There are still so many opportunities in the pet industry. Since it is still in its infancy, anything can happen. Just don’t delay, big money is always earned by the first comers and then by the people who innovate what’s already hot on the market. So get out there start today, even if its research, write a business plan and get it done.
